5 Tips for Christmas Photos - Locations Photography

This is one of the best times to capture new photos of your family, but it is often easier said than done. Not everyone loves to be in front of the camera, kids just want to play, and more often than not, someone in the group has very high expectations. These factors can all make family photo time a less than pleasurable experience, as well as make it difficult to try and get everyone together for a Christmas photo.

Five Tips for Christmas Photos of your Family and Friends

1. Ease them into the Photos. Don't wait until the day of to get your friends and family used to the camera. Breaking out your camera whenever you can gives them a chance to warm up to being photographed and will help with confidence.

2. Know your Lighting. Lighting indoors can be tricky so it is important to make sure your camera is on a high ISO setting or has a night mode. We recommend at least 1600 ISO for indoor photography.

3. Compose your Shots. When photographing people, it is generally best to have the bottom of the camera around their mid thigh area unless you specifically need a full body shot.

4. Posing Basics. If you are a fan of more traditional posed photos, you will want to face the men in the family square to the camera, while turning the women slightly inward toward the center of the group to slim them down.

5. Have Fun. Remember, the holidays are supposed to be fun and carefree for the whole family. Don't miss the forest for the trees and forget to spend time with the people you love. Try to capture the experience, but do not forget to live in the moment.
