8 Easy Ways to Take Better Photos with Your Smartphone

Today’s smartphones are equipped with impressive camera technology. Unless you’re a professional photographer, there's really no need to invest in a DSLR when your smartphone can produce stunning images. If you frequently find yourself taking photos but wish they could be improved, consider these helpful tips to elevate your photography skills.

1. Skip the zoom; get up close instead. While zoom can be useful in certain situations, it often diminishes the finer details in your photos. Whenever possible, step closer to your subject – you'll be amazed at the enhancement in image quality.

2. Utilize gridlines. To achieve a more balanced composition in your photos, activate gridlines on your screen. If you're familiar with the rule of thirds, these lines will help you frame your shots more aesthetically. You can find the gridline option in your camera settings.

3. Ensure your lens is clean. This may seem obvious, but you'll notice a significant improvement in your photos after giving your lens a quick wipe. Since we use our phones so often, it's easy for dust and grime to accumulate without us noticing.

4. Experiment with editing instead of filters. If you have some free time and a willingness to learn, forego the standard filters used by many and try editing your pictures with programs such as Photoshop Express or Snapseed, which are both user-friendly.

5. Avoid using the flash. Unfortunately, the flash on your phone is typically located too close to your lens, resulting in blurry photos. Additionally, it can create unflattering effects on your subjects’ skin and eyes. Instead, seek out natural light or illuminate your scene with indoor lighting.

6. Don’t hesitate to try new angles. Capturing images from different perspectives can yield remarkable results. For instance, shooting from a bird’s eye view can transform the context of your photo entirely.

7. Use your volume button for convenience. Instead of tapping the button on your screen, use the "up" volume button to capture your images; it's often more comfortable and stable.

8. Capture photos horizontally. Another simple way to enhance your photography is to rotate your phone to take horizontal shots, allowing for a broader composition and inclusion of more elements.

Ultimately, the more you engage with your smartphone photography, the easier it will become to discover techniques that resonate with your style.
