Outfits to Avoid in Your Family Photo Sessions

Planning a family photo session can be exciting, but choosing the right outfits to keep everyone comfortable and ensure stunning photos can be quite the challenge. If you're uncertain about what to wear for your session, here are some outfit choices you should steer clear of:

  • Matchy-matchy. Gone are the days of everyone wearing identical outfits. You can still achieve a coordinated look by incorporating different shades of the same color, avoiding the need for everyone to be in the exact same clothing.
  • Bold patterns and logos. Clothing with logos or loud patterns can draw attention away from your family members in the photo. While patterns can work, opt for subtle designs, and steer clear of logos and cartoon characters.
  • Short sleeves and pants. Family portraits often look best when everyone's skin is not overly exposed, which helps keep the focus on faces. Depending on your session's style and location, consider minimizing exposure and opting out of shorts.
  • Bold accessories. Accessories can enhance your look for a family photo, but it's crucial to choose subtle pieces that won’t distract from the main focus. Avoid large statement earrings or heavy necklaces.
  • Uncomfortable clothing. Comfort is key during your photo session—if you're uncomfortable, it'll show in the photos. Even if you adore that new outfit, if it doesn't feel right, consider something else that allows you to relax.
  • Neon. While fun pops of color can work wonders, neon clothing typically clashes with skin tones and negatively impacts photos, so it’s best to avoid these hues entirely.
  • All white or black. Outfits consisting entirely of white or black can cause detail loss in the photos, which is typically something apparel enhances. Feel free to wear neutral tones, but mix in a different color for visual interest.

To minimize stress leading up to your family photo session, it’s wise to plan ahead, allowing everyone the chance to enjoy the day to the fullest.
