Preparing Your House for Your Upcoming In-Home Photo Session

Transforming your home into a setting for your family photos not only captures the essence of your shared experiences but also creates lasting memories. In years to come, you'll cherish these images and the stories they tell about your life together. It's understandable to feel a bit anxious about a professional photography shoot in your home. You may worry about the size of your space or the lighting conditions; however, there are numerous ways to ensure your home becomes a beautiful backdrop for your photographs.

  • A little clutter is acceptable. Remember, your home reflects your family's life, so some clutter is to be expected in your photos. A few items out of place are not a concern, but if clutter begins to overwhelm the scene, it could distract from the focal point of your family. Take a moment to assess your surroundings before the session and consider tidying up the most visible areas.
  • Don’t go overboard with cleaning. While your home should look presentable, there's no need for an exhaustive deep clean. Ensure there aren’t any dishes stacking up in the sink or noticeable stains in areas you intend to photograph; that will set the stage just fine.
  • Check your bedding. If you’re planning for a few playful shots of your children on the bed or you reading to them, opt for simpler bedding designs, as busy patterns can shift the focus away from your loved ones. Consider using the main bedroom or swapping children's bedding temporarily for a cleaner look.
  • Enhance your couch. If you want cozy images on your couch, consider adding a soft throw or a few decorative pillows. Avoid overly busy patterns or colors that might distract from the moment.
  • Spruce up your yard. If you plan to step outside for photography, ensure your lawn is mowed and free of any unwanted remnants. A clean outdoor scene creates a pleasant environment for both your family and the photographer.

Taking time to prepare your home ahead of your in-home photo session can significantly assist the photographer, who will naturally focus on capturing the best lighting and backgrounds. Should adjustments be necessary, your photographer will expertly arrange the space to ensure you receive stunning photographs that you'll cherish for years to come.
